The Brief

A client came to us following a series of water ingress issues to refurbish seven atrium floors finished with Horning parquet timber. The existing finish had begun to deteriorate and was no longer providing the protection required.

The brief was to repair the condition of the floors, prevent any further deterioration, and deliver the works in a way that avoided disruption within a live building.

After assessing the condition of the parquet, Loughton Direct confirmed that the timber was suitable for refurbishment, but the original finish had reached the end of its serviceable life. Rather than a full timber replacement, a sand and seal approach was most appropriate.

The floors across all seven atrium levels were carefully sanded to remove the damaged original finish. A clear lacquer was then applied to not only protect the floor, but also bringing out all the colours and grain in the parquet floor.

Given the scale of the programme and the clients request to keep the building fully operational in the working week, the works were phased and delivered over 7 consecutive weekends. This allowed each atrium floor to be completed individually, enabling the client to operate as normal.

The end result was a refreshed and more resilient timber floor finish that improved both the appearance and long-term performance of the space.
